CHapter Fourteen

While the courtiers filed out of the hall, Dareine had cushions and food brought over by some servants. Shortbread, cake and fruits, light wine and sweet juices. They invited the refugees to sit down and eat. Dareine was courteous and yet distant, and the refugees did not wait for more invitation. Tanner grabbed a piece of shortbread and a cup of juice, and passed it to Emery. Brix sniffed at a fluffy cake, and took a slice. Only Laurel and Grim did not touch any food, but stood waiting, exchanging worried looks.

Then, from one of the winding ramps came Cillian of the Hunt and Kestrel, followed by two more elves, a tall male with dark hair and a thin, silver-haired female in a complicated dress. They moved with the slow deliberation of someone that is used to power. They looked at the travelers with open curiosity, and then they spoke to Dareine in the singsong tones of the elven language. Grim did not catch any of what they were saying, but heard the word Dimora, repeated twice.

Grim remembered from his days in the Academy. The Dimora were the ancient spirits that were said to haunt the Aymhelin and the Bloodwood, and were possibly even more sinister and mysterious than the Fae. The differences and similarities between the two were much debated by old men that knew very little about either of them, as was the habit in academia. Soon afterward his name, somewhat oddly accented, followed. He glanced at Laurel, but she was not looking at him. She certainly understood what was being said, and it did not seem to make her any happier.

The two newcomers turned their eyes towards him, and Grim straightened his back. Everything about them spelled magic users, and it stood to reason that Dareine wanted to have some mystical support in what was to come, since the Fae had been mentioned.

The last time Grim had faced an elven mage had been in Greyhaven, a lifetime before, and two days before they kicked him out. He had felt the same back then as he felt now under the steady gaze of the two newcomers. Like his own life depended on what the elves would say, and his life was the last of their cares. He braced himself for what was to come.

Now the three Latari came forward, walking side by side, and spread out around Grim. Cillian remained behind, standing by one of the support cables, looking on. Kestrel was by his side, one step behind, as silent and still as a shadow, Dareine and their two companions settled at the three corners of a triangle around Grim, at a distance of about two yards. Like they were getting ready to attack him, three against one. This too was like his time back in school. He had hoped to leave all of it behind, but now he tossed his head, defiantly.

“These are Travaran and Delsanra,” Dareine said. Their voice was soft but authoritative. “They are of Ledish Schall, and wish to question you.
